FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno police officer is being credited with helping to save a dog's life.

Early Friday morning, Officer Kelly Wilkes was on patrol near Fulton Street and La Sierra Drive in Central Fresno when someone waved him down. The person said there was a dead dog in the canal. But when Wilkes got out of his car, he realized the animal was alive and trying to stay afloat.

"I looked over my left shoulder and I see over here he was actually struggling on the side, so I parked my car, walked over there with my salami sandwich, kind of lured him over and just pulled him out ," said Wilkes.

It's not known how the dog got into the canal in the first place, but he's now safe thanks to that officer.
